Le Bal Pare – Set of 4 cards

The most elegant of cards for Christmas, birthdays and all genteel occasions!

Journey back to the sumptuous age of minuets by candlelight, gallantry, gowns and high hair with these exquisite greeting cards.

Based on Le Bal Pare, a painting by Augustin de Saint-Aubin (1736-1807), this engraving was said to depict the ultra-fashionable Duchess of Devonshire, Georgiana Cavendish, when it was published in England. The French no doubt had some fine ladies of their own in mind!

These couples may be noble birth, but ballet dancers also participated in balls of this kind, sometimes as invited guests or to entertain and demonstrate the newest dances for their patrons (indeed the Duchess of Devonshire was one of England’s leading patrons of ballet).

Ideal as a most genteel of Christmas images, these are cards with which to celebrate any occasion where the wine flows, the musicians play, and the dancers dip and sway long into the night…
