Six Balanchine Ballerinas
This documentary celebrates six of the leading ballerinas who created works with America’s greatest choreographer, George Balanchine. The women featured are Mary Ellen Moylan, Maria Tallchief, Melissa Hayden, Allegra Kent, Merrill Ashley and Darci Kistler, and the program shows them keeping alive the ballets and the inspiration they learned from him.
These dancers, along with Suzanne Farrell, Tanaquil Le Clercq and Diana Adams, are seen in a feast of excerpts from Balanchine ballets including The Four Temperaments, Symphony in C, Firebird, Ballo Della Regina, Apollo, Agon, Scotch Symphony, Concerto Barocco and La Sonnambula. The film offers a composite portrait of each woman as a dancer and specifically as a Balanchine dancer. For all of these ballerinas, Balanchine was the single most powerful influence on their professional lives. The program examines how he nurtured and shaped each of them and how they, in turn, inspired him in many different ways.
