The legendary stage partnership of Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev lasted for some seventeen years, until Fonteyn’s retirement at the age of sixty. This documentary recounts the circumstances that brought the two dancers together and the public adulation they inspired. Friends and professional associates recall how the partnership revitalised Fonteyn’s career and the chemistry that their combined personalities and styles produced.
Written and directed by Peter Batty, this documentary is a tribute to these great artists. Drawing on performance and behind-the-scenes footage, the film relates the demands which international stardom placed on them, the KGB’s harassment of Nureyev, the incident of their arrest on drug charges, and the complications arising from Fonteyn’s relationship with Tito Arias. The film also includes an abridged performance of Frederick Ashton’s Marguerite and Armand, the couple’s signature piece choreographed for them in 1963.
